My magazine piles!

I'll admit it: I hoard things. I like to collect and I feel bad throwing stuff out. It feels like a waste.

One thing I've always kept are magazines, which was fine when I would just pick one up here or there (I had a Martha Stewart phase a few years ago. It started as research applying for a job with the magazine, but ended up so much more!). But, my mother got me a subscription to Real Simple (love it!) and for the past 3 years I've been getting them every month.

I love articles about cooking, organizing and saving money and there are so many great articles that I want to reread and things I want to try to help simplify and organize my life. The problem is that I'm not in a place where I can utilize a lot of their information. So, I've been saving them.

This irks my husband because this is the third apartment we've had, which means he's been lugging boxes of magazines around. He's been telling me he's going to just throw them out, which he'd never do, but its something he likes to threaten occasionally.

I always planned on pulling out the articles I wanted to save, scanning them and tossing the rest. Now, with the awesomeness that is Pinterest, I can just find them online and pin them all!

It took me about a day, but I sat down (between my other cleaning and general baby-chasing) and skimmed each issue page by page. Each issue has already been read, so I did not let myself reread everything. If it looked interesting then I pulled it out.

After I pulled out everything I wanted, I sat down at the computer and went to the various magazine websites. I did a quick search for the article and pinned each one. Easy peasy!

I went and saw Kitty's mom for the first time in awhile. She still looks hallow-faced and sickly. They ordered a full spectrum hair follicle drug test. We're still waiting for the results. The longer it takes, the better for us.

I don't really want to think on any of that. If it comes back negative then we have nothing until she screws up again. For her and her kids' sake, I hope she doesn't. For our and Kitty's sake, I hope she does.

I've got my linens reorganized and pulled out a lot of stuff to donate, so I need to see what's next on the list. We'll need to go through the kids clothes soon; apparently Kitty has nothing to wear!

We went to the renaissance faire last weekend and Kitty wanted to dress nice. She we through almost everything she owns. We made suggestions. Nothing she wanted to wear fit. She picked out a sheer ballet skirt over short shorts, which made her look like she was just wearing undies. We told her no, and there was a TANTRUM.

We haven't had one of those in at least a year.

Murl told her to can it or they would stay home and she wore another skirt under her ballet skirt. This all took over an hour. I told Murl that we'd be picking out her school clothes the night before.

I realized, while preparing myself for the school year (in case she's with us) that all the elementary schools wear uniforms. Thank goodness! Its more money, but less hassle. Plus, her mother would have to pay for half, so its not really an issue.

The schools down here also have supply lists that are twice as long. Sigh.

Wolfie and I are making peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies. Almost done, then to his nap!

Woo woo!

I'm going to attempt to simplify laundry and linens. This should be pretty easy for me. We don't have any laundry equipment here, so no laundry room! I do two loads a week at my MIL's and that's that.

I plan on reorganizing the linens in my closets. We have sheets we don't use for bed sizes we don't own anymore. I'm going to keep a full set for the air mattress, but the rest I can donate. And I've got probably 20 baby sized towels and 20 more receiving blankets, so I'll go through those as well.

I've been planning on making a quilt out of the receiving blankets. I originally wanted to make this I love you(r DNA) quilt, but I've just noticed that its crib sized and I'd like to make a twin. We've got some nice crib sized blankets already and I want this to be something he'll be able to use for a long time.

So those are my laundry plans. I'll go through the kids clothes again in September to see what we need to buy them for winter and repackage the baby clothes for storing. Its all in old diaper boxes, which are not good to store for a long time.

The grownup clothes are set for now, aside from going through Murl's socks to hunt for holes and see if he needs a new pack.

I think I can handle that this week!Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514584197790756219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290544879932038960.post-10978463611284344292012-08-04T21:57:00.000-05:002012-08-04T22:07:06.788-05:00The Big Moment

One thing that I've wanted to talk about here are mental health issues, but I can't seem to figure out how to tackle it. Part of the reason is because I stopped taking my medication about a month ago. It was hard at first, but I've been feeling a lot better. I've been struggling with just getting things done, including writing.

So, right now I'm taking everything a day at a time, doing the minimum cleaning that needs to be done, feeding my family and playing with my kids. It seems so stupid that even doing those things can be so hard, but for me they are.

I'm always waiting for a Big Moment where I'll suddenly be free of everything I need to do and motivated enough to sit down and make a plan for the future. That will never happen. I know I need to put everything aside and make my plan, but something is always holding me back.

I've lost my coherent train of thought again and am getting tired, so I guess that will be my note for now. Maybe a wake up call to decide when my Big Moment will be, instead of waiting for it.

I'm still not sure what those words are, because I can't wrap my mind around how someone could act the way Kitty's mother does.

I really don't understand it. How could a mother just... BE the way she is?

Kitty went back to her mom's this morning. Murl talked to her on the phone and she spent the day playing video games. Her mother hasn't seen her in over two weeks; you'd think they'd spend some time together!

CPS is involved now because of alleged abuse and neglect. Kitty's brothers are violent to her and other kids. The house is apparently full of cat feces. Her (second!) parole officer is the one who had her arrested for alleged drug use and theft.

I'm watching Wolfie sleeping in his swing (he wouldn't go to bed!) and I can't imagine what must go through her head. How could you let your sons get as out of control as they are? How can you steal money and pills from your own mother and neighbors? How can you not put your kids ahead of your wants/needs?

I understand she's got an addiction. She needs help, but she obviously hasn't been motivated enough to get it. For her kid's sake, I really hope this helps, otherwise she might not have her kids anymore.

We've been waiting for Kitty's mother to screw up and we found out today that she did.

Last Wednesday.

No one bothered to tell us. Our lawyer got an anonymous call today. Which means we dropped Kitty off on Sunday and her mother hasn't even been home.

So, Murl drove up to pick up Kitty, who is with us now. Her mother called to say she was released and arrange a time to pick her up tomorrow. Unfortunately, we'll have to give her back. But, we're filing to go back to court and this time we'll have some more fuel.

We don't know why she was arrested this time, but its probably drug related. I can't find any information online, so I guess there's not a newspaper there that publishes these things. I'm not sure. I did, however, find an old mugshot of hers, which is hilarious!

Its another waiting game. I'm hoping this all gets sorted out before school starts!

Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514584197790756219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290544879932038960.post-52570892124970439652012-07-13T22:39:00.002-05:002012-07-13T22:39:34.628-05:00When are nurse-ins necessary?

I read an article today about a nurse-in at Pirate's Cove waterpark in Colorado and I was thinking about nurse-ins in general.

It seems like moms are overzealous when it comes to proving they can breastfeed anywhere. I breastfeed and I agree that people should be more aware of the law. The employee admitted she wasn't familiar with the law and I believe her. I've worked in different stores and have never had any training on what to do if someone is breastfeeding.

Before I became a mother I never thought about where someone could or could not breastfeed at all. If I had seen someone nursing while I was working I wouldn't have said anything. I would have wondered if it was allowed or if there was were even laws about this, because I didn't know.

Chances are that unless the employees are also breastfeeding moms who wanted to make sure they could feed their children in public, they wouldn't know. And she was responding to complaints by other customers, who also probably didn't know.

So, there was a lot of ignorance. A letter was written, phone calls were made and an apology issued. The park said they'd use this as a training exercise. Does that mean that 25 moms need to go in and prove their point? Do they need more phone calls expressing disappointment?

I guess I've been lucky; no one has asked me to cover up or go somewhere else. And I wouldn't if they did. But, in this case, I'm not sure a nurse-in is really necessary. Shouldn't those be saved for places that won't abide by the law?Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514584197790756219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290544879932038960.post-56740632974079603162012-06-30T22:23:00.000-05:002012-06-30T22:23:42.616-05:00The Happy!
Jamie at Scissors and Steam has started a challenge for getting healthy! Its not necessarily about weight loss, its about getting healthy. For me, I'd like to lose 10 lbs., but I'd also like to get stronger. I have wobbly spaghetti arms and my Wolf is getting heavier; its been getting harder to carry him.

Its a 6 week challange and I think for me its very feasible. We'll have Kitty for 4 of those 6 weeks, which means more running around and less time to sit on my ass to eat. Plus, I plan on setting up the Wii Fit and trying to reach some goals in there during the time she's not here. I think it'll be a lot harder to do that while she's around.

So, I'm going to spend the rest of the weekend thinking about my weekly goals. Maybe I'll use my Y membership. They have babysitting! Yay!Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514584197790756219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290544879932038960.post-77197507538352992822012-05-24T22:36:00.001-05:002012-08-04T22:12:49.337-05:00Baby Fever

Wolf had a fever on Tuesday, but it went away. We went to the park today and it returned, so he was cranky. I had picked up more Tylenol on the way to the park, so we had it when we got home. We also dropped Bendy Guy on the walk home and back tracked to find him. We only had to go 2 blocks. Its good exercise!

I've been really bad with my cleaning. My goal tomorrow is to clean the bathroom. I need to get my vinegar out of the car. Then I'll go thru my cleaning list again for Zone Defense. I did clean the car out! Well, I threw the trash out, but I haven't brought anything in. My trunk is full.

I've also decided to write more. I'm not very good at this blogging thing, it ends up more like a diary. So, maybe if I write more stuff for me then I can be better at this. Who knows.Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514584197790756219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290544879932038960.post-26497719507884979302012-05-23T23:42:00.002-05:002012-08-04T22:13:37.037-05:00Preparing the Garden

I cleared my spot for my tomato and jalapeno plants in the yard. The plants had spikes and I don't have gardening gloves, so I used winter mittens. It went from this:

To this:

There's still more to do, but it looks better. I upset about 10,000 ants. They freaked out and were going everywhere. Do ants bite? I think one bit me.

Part of me is thinking maybe I won't plant them there. The soil looks pretty shitty and there's some kind of electrical thing in there. I was planning on getting mulch and new soil, but I kind of don't want to. We don't even know if we'll be staying here when the lease is up. I kind of hope we do, since I don't want to move again and we don't have money to pay a security deposit on anything if we do. Yes, I hate not being able to open windows or the fact that we don't get to control the heat/AC during the day, but I can deal with that for another year.

So, maybe I'll do pots. They look so small and shitty; it kind of depresses me to look at them. I may have killed last years tomatoes, but they at least grew up to a foot or so tall. These have been planted for 2 months and are barely 2 inches. I think getting them outside will help because they'll get better sunlight and warmth, but I'm afraid they are too small. Maybe I'll just start bringing the whole tray outside. You can see from the photos, though, that they'll get plenty of light. Those photos were taking at 4pm.

I talked to Murl and he said we should get hanging things for them. He thinks if I put them on the ground the ants will destroy them. I can't keep them inside, though, because of the lack of sun and heat. The AC is on all the time!

So, we'll see what we can do. I'll be sad if I don't get any fruit again, but I guess that's how it goes.

I don't know what time they are landing, but it should be soon. I texted him to see if he could say goodnight to Wolf, but I haven't heard back.

I'm watching SNL and I just saw an ad for Brave. I really want to see that. I think the romantic message is a lot better than other Disney movies.

I like that the girl doesn't need a love interest and instead the movie focuses on family. Its a nice change of pace from Disney. They almost got it right with the Princess and the Frog, but then they had Tiana be willing to give up her dreams. That didn't rub me right.

In other SNL news, Mick Jagger bothers me.

Wolf and I went through all the baby clothes today. I finished packing up all the 0-3's. He's still wearing the 3-6's, even though he is almost 9 months. I also pulled out everything else to see what we still need. We are OK with 6-9, but I have almost no 9-12. Hopefully we'll get more hand me downs from Murl's sister. I think we'll survive the summer.

Tonight was sweet potato burritos. I forgot to soak and cook my beans before, so I didn't eat until 10. They are so good! I only made 2, so tomorrow I am going to make the rest and freeze them. Then I can have burritos whenever I want!

Its lonely without a husband.Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514584197790756219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290544879932038960.post-56672822297552872382012-05-18T22:45:00.000-05:002012-08-04T22:14:10.728-05:00A Day of Cooking

Today was a cooking day. I made lasagna, which was tasty. I also tried making a key lime pie.

Juicing limes take a long time! So does crushing graham crackers! It was pretty easy, but I had evaporated milk instead of sweetened condensed, so it was not sweet. Next time I'll make sure I have the right kind. I think that with some cool whip it tastes OK. Murl will probably not eat much, which sucks, because he is the one I made the pie for.

That pie took so much time that I didn't really do anything else. I'm sad that my plants look so sad. I don't know if they will be ready to go outside anytime soon. I need to clear a spot for them anyways. I meant to clean out Wolf's clothing drawer today, but didn't have time.

We had court today for custody. They figured out our summer vacation, so I'm just waiting to get that in the mail. Apparently Kitty's mother had an outburst in the courtroom (about Murl not giving her my phone number), which makes her look bad. And Kitty's advocate is on our side, which means if the custody evaluator had been on our side we would have gotten custody. So, now its just a waiting game until she screws up. Should be soon.

Murl leaves tomorrow after work. I'm excited for new foods, but I will miss him. I'll have no one to watch SNL with tomorrow or to cuddle with in bed. I'll have to let the baby in bed with me.Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514584197790756219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290544879932038960.post-61303234067460561812012-05-17T23:02:00.000-05:002012-05-17T23:02:22.456-05:00Catching Up

I should get caught up.

I've cleaned the inside of my fridge, so I'm calling the kitchen done. I'm not moving the fridge.

I picked all the trash out of the car. It needs to be vacuumed, but I'll have to take it somewhere to do that.

Also, I moved all the furniture in the living room and vacuumed.

We like the park. Wolf and I spend 2 hours there the other day with the cousins. People don't like their kids to play with my baby. Its weird. This woman had a little boy she was playing with in the sandbox and there was a stroller about 10 ft away with a blanket over it. I thought no there can't be a baby in there and then I though oh no that can't be that woman's stroller. I was wrong. She left her baby in a stroller 10 ft away from her!

Murl leaves Saturday for Tuscon. He and his brother are driving their late grandmother's car back for his mother to use. They leave after Murl gets out from work, fly down there and drive back. They should be in Monday morning before Murl goes to work. He's going to be dead all day.

I've planned a tasty non-meat weekend. Sweet potato burritos on Saturday and Potato Madras on Sunday. It will save me money and I can eat foods that Murl doesn't like!

More cleaning tomorow!
Murl set everything up, which he was cranky about, but I planned and prepared the whole thing, so its only fair. I stayed with the kids at the park until it was time for food. It was supposed to be raining, but it held off, which was awesome. It was really windy, though, which made for problems lighting the grill. We thought we were going to have to pack it in to go somewhere else to grill, but we got it.

His sister didn't show up with the cousins until 2 hours after we started and our old roommate was there and we kind of ignored him. He owes me $300 for bills, but his son and Kitty have grown up together, so we'll always invite him. The kids played, mostly in the sandbox, and I think they had a lot of fun. We decided not to do the pinata because of the wind. All the little pieces and candy would go everywhere. So, we'll do that in 2 weekends when Kitty is back.

Throwing kid's parties is hard, but so far they've all come out well. Probably because we don't have a lot of other kids to invite. I'm no where near ready to throw a party with other kids. I imagine that would be pretty expensive.

My FIL took us to a parking lot carnival Friday evening. We met the cousins there and spent a ridiculous amount of money for the kids to ride mediocre rides. They loved it, though, so its worth it.
Not seeing Kitty for 14 days in a row is something we now do every month and something that Murl has done quite often in the past, whenever her mother has decided he can't see her. So, boo-hoo.

Saturday we had Kitty's 6th birthday party. I'll post on that later, complete with photos.

Today is mother's day and it was OK. That's really all I have to say about that. Murl dropped Kitty off at 8am and I got to sleep late with Wolf. We watched TV and I cleaned up the kitchen and part of the bathroom. Murl took a nap, since he had to get up super early and I didn't wake him up, which made us late for dinner at a friends. He woke up two hours after we were supposed to be there to a bunch of missed texts. So, we headed over there with Wolf and ate some delicious foods. Burgers stuffed with blue cheese, bacon and spinach! Yum.
Now, because her mother decided to change her mind about her birthday, we are going to just meet them on Sunday. Our lawyer said that we shouldn't be doing them any favors, which I agree with. She is going to raise some hell for us.

Murl talked to Kitty on the phone and asked what she was doing this afternoon and she said they were just going to the park. Apparently those were her "plans" that interfered with us seeing her after school. Total crap.

Went back to work today to pick up some stuff. Didn't have to see the manager since he never works on Thursdays. It was good to see people and I got some photos printed instead. Once I finish all my cleaning, I am going to start on my scrapbooking and Wolf's baby book. I'm super behind on both.

My MIL is taking us to a fair tomorrow afternoon, which will be fun. I'll need to remember to bring the camera. Before we go I need to finish cleaning the kitchen and bring laundry to my in-laws. I think I can handle that. All the kitchen needs is the fridge cleaned out, the nook cleaned and the floor mopped.

Here's your daily Wolf!
We were planning on going up to see her, since she is at her mom's on weekdays. Murl thinks that our lawyers have been talking, because they did not answer their phone at all yesterday and today she told him they have plans tomorrow and why did he assume he could take Kitty out after school? He asked her about this weeks ago and she said it was fine. So, we won't be seeing her until Friday night. We'll make a cake and finalize plans and then party on Saturday!

My MIL reserved the pavilion at the park today and my FIL is making potato salad. I need to pick up a few things tomorrow when I shop and we will be set. Its supposed to rain, of course, so we'll be heading to their house if it does. At least the kids can get outside to play if it dries up.
I cleaned up most of the kitchen today. Cabinets were vacuumed and food was rearranged. I somehow ended up with more room for food then I had before, without throwing anything out. Tomorrow I'll clean out the fridge and clean off the top of the fridge. Then its just the nook and the floor and that's it; the kitchen will be done! Its very exciting. Yes, it was already pretty clean to begin with, but getting a whole room clean is still exciting.

Do you have a meal plan for each day? Yes, I use Google Calendar to plan my meals.

Do you follow your meal plan? About 95% of the time.

If not, why not? Sometimes we have "surprise" dinners at my in-laws that no one tells me about beforehand.

Do you ever struggle with frozen foods not thawing in time for dinner? Sometimes. Mostly chicken.

Can you find recipe ingredients when you need them? Only spices, because they are all crowded on a shelf.

How do you feel when you open the refrigerator? Why is that? Sometimes it seems really empty and I know I need to clean it again.

Do you have a method for storing leftovers? Yes, I put them in plastic containers and label them with the date and contents. I need masking tape to do this better. And I'd like to have all glass containers, but that won't happen.

If so, does it work well for you or do you have multiple science experiments going on at one time? It works well. Sometimes I find old things, but I try to clean out the fridge once every couple of weeks. The only time its a problem is when I make way too much and Murl doesn't bring lunch to work and I have to eat it for like 4 lunches in a row.

Do you have a daily kitchen cleaning routine? I wipe down the counters and sink and sweep every day and usually mope every 2 or 3 days.

Do you have a regular deep cleaning routine for the kitchen? Yes, but I need to do it more often. So, I guess its not that regular.

Do you have adequate storage for the items you currently own? Yes.

Do you use all the kitchen items you own on a regular basis? Pretty much. The blender I've been using more while making baby food, so that might stop.

Off the top of your head, are there gadgets and appliances that are just taking up space in your kitchen? I don't think so.

Does clutter pile up on your counters? How come? Sometimes I put things there so I can find a place to put them later. I also have a mug I need to glue back together.

What is the one thing that stands between you and a clean, organized kitchen? The size :) which I can't control. And my laziness. I need to get back on my weekly routine.

So, tomorrow I am going to start the actual food organizing. The kitchen is pretty clean and I think I'm pretty organized, but going through a list will be helpful. This way I can get everything in good spaces before I go food shopping on Thursday. It'll make it easier to put away.

I moved the bench today and threw out the boxes. Hopefully people will use it instead of taking their shoes off in other rooms. There's so much stuff that needs to be cleaned and organized and I'm so behind. I'm glad this is getting me motivated to do it, but I honestly don't do much during the day.

I've been staying up really late, which means being really tired in the morning. For the past 2 days Wolf has wanted to get up earlier than we normally do. Its like 8am, which really isn't that early, but it is when you are up until 2. I feel terrible, though, because I make Wolf stay in bed with me and pretty much force him to fall back asleep, then we end up sleeping way later and nothing gets done. I promised him that tomorrow we will get up when he wakes up, so I'm going to go to bed earlier tonight. Probably at 11:30.

A nice bench, which will go by the stairs for taking shoes on and off, and a cabinet that I'm going to use for my craft supplies. So, right now they're just sitting in the middle of my living room. I was going to move them today, but I didn't feel like making space.

This weekend was low. It was an OK weekend, but its the first weekend where I'm not working. I spent it worrying about money instead of enjoying my time with my family. That was stupid of me. The one thing that I did not worry about was getting Kitty to clean up after herself before she left, which is never done if I'm not home.

It also rained all weekend (and today and again tomorrow), so there was no going outside. We had a thunderstorm, but it wasn't a very exciting one. We stayed inside and mostly played board games. The dollhouse was pulled out at one point, but I don't like playing with it with Kitty. There is a wooden cat that stays in the house and farts on everyone, which is gross and something that I'm trying to get her to stop doing. She will also tell me how to play and get upset if I don't follow her lead, but she's always been like that.

My tomato and jalapeno plants look really sad. Some of the leaves started falling off. We have a huge window that takes up most of the living room wall, but it faces south. It is awesome in the winter and was great when I first planet the seeds, but now the sun is moving more north and it doesn't come through the window as well. I need to decide when I'm going to put them outside. I'm afraid they are too small and would be washed away or eaten.

I was going to doing my kitchen organization questions for Zone Defense, but its late. I'll do that tomorrow and move the furniture. I'll throw out some boxes and make space. We still have the crib box, which is very flat and doesn't take up space, which is probably why we haven't thrown it out yet. Its not in our way. Plus, people are always saying they're going to take it and burn it, but no one has. Its going in the dumpster!

So that was mostly my weekend. I was very tired during it. Wolfie and I wake up around 10 usually, but Kitty is used to getting up at 7 for school, so that's what happens when she's here. Its not her fault, school starts early, but she wakes up Wolfie and then we're up. And, she won't nap, so I don't nap either.

Next weekend is Kitty's 6th birthday. I need to get a headcount tomorrow and decide what to buy. We are having a cookout at the park, which will be a lot of fun. I'm hoping it doesn't rain. Its rained the past few weekends. Friday is supposed to be sunny, so hopefully that will continue through the weekend. Otherwise we'll have too many people in our apartment and we have almost no seating. Plus, the dentists downstairs are open and the kids will be too loud, which will result in an angry call from the landlord.

So, now I head to bed. Murl should be done with my kindle, so I can play sudoku as I fall asleep. He hogs it!
Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514584197790756219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290544879932038960.post-45963533528104155792012-05-03T23:12:00.000-05:002012-05-10T23:51:06.446-05:00To the Park!Wolf and I walked to the park again today. I'd like to do this every day, but we'll see. It was 85 out and really hot for a walk, so hopefully it won't be too much warmer than that for most of the summer.

We swung for a bit, but mostly sat in the sandbox. This is the second time he's been in the sand and he didn't cry. He raked his fingers around and stick some sticks in his mouth. Mostly he watched all the other kids run around and yell. I think its hard for him to concentrate on what he's doing when there's so much else going on.
It was pretty busy, but I guess if you want your kids to play outside after school then you take them to the park. Its what I'll be doing until we have a yard and probably after that, too.

I did the next part of my cleaning yesterday, but never wrote about it. Real quick: The bedroom looks really nice. I just need to get Murl to quit throwing his clothes on the floor. I think we can keep it this way! Now I just need a day with the car to clean that out.Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514584197790756219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290544879932038960.post-15511499835874078392012-05-01T23:19:00.001-05:002012-05-01T23:19:24.762-05:00Zone Defense 2.1 - Your Clothes ClosetToday I started on the official first zone from Zone Defense, which is my personal space. Today I tackled the closet. Most of what I owned doesn't fit and was from when I worked at Macy's 6 years ago. I have close to $1000 of nice clothes in there (don't worry, I didn't pay anywhere near that for them!). So, some will go to Megan and the rest to the thrift store. I kept a few skirts, a couple dresses and a couple blouses. I need to get a new knit sweater, since mine has some holes in it.

I cleaned out my bureau a couple months and haven't bought anything new since then, so I'm leaving that alone for now. I need to do the top of my bureau and my nightstand, plus vacuuming the floor and closet and that room will be done. Oh, and the windowsill. Perhaps I'll make curtains, too, finally!

It feels good to be getting something done. It seems I'll be working my way up to the harder stuff, since the bedroom isn't that bad.Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514584197790756219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290544879932038960.post-62433513617290930972012-04-30T22:36:00.000-05:002012-05-10T23:50:01.612-05:00Teeth!

My Wolf has finally cut his first tooth that looks like its going to stay. Around 2 or 3 months he had one come up and go back down. Its been hanging out under his gums so we've been able to see it and we rub his gums a lot to try help it break through. Today he started chewing on my finger and HEY there it was!

Nursing has been fine, except for one nibble fest where I had to remove him and have him wait a little longer. He didn't like that, but I also didn't like getting munched on.

He also didn't like me attempting to take his photo. It seems like it would be pretty easy to take a photo when he smiles, but he's really wiggly and you have to have the camera at the right angle. My little baby is growing up!
In less exciting news, I call my store's HR department. I've never had any real luck with them. It took me 2 months to get Wolf on my health insurance because they told me they did what they needed to but didn't and never called me back when I tried to fix it. They rarely return calls. So, I was surprised when the HR head actually answered his phone. I told him briefly what was going on and he said he was embarrassed that this happened. He transfered me to the employee relations person and I told her in more detail. I don't think she's going to do much. A co-worker spoke to someone in the office before about similar problems with the manager and they told her too bad, she has to do whatever he says. But, maybe it'll make everyone else's life a little easier there.

Tomorrow I promise to clean. I didn't do much today. Maybe promising here will keep me on task.
I've been working every Sunday since my maternity leave ended. It was nice to get out of the house and interact with adults once a week and the small amount of extra money was nice, too. Part of that income was based on a small commision for selling certain items and doing certain services for customers. We had an agreement in our store that if you do the work, you get the sale. Its fair. Again, its only a small amount of money, but if you work on an order for an hour or two, you should get the extra $2-3 for that work.

My manager takes in service orders and does none of them; he makes his extra money with sales and if he works to make the sale, he should get the money for that sale. Again, its fair. So, whoever does the work will switch the sale so they get the credit. We all do this to each other, its not like its something that only happens with him. He's complained in the past about us doing this to him, but he still refuses to do the work himself.

Today he announced that switching the sales would not be allowed and if you are doing the service work then that's what you are paid for and the person who talks to the customer should get the extra money. He said that if we don't agree with it we can leave and if we stay and we don't agree we will be fired. According to him the company has no qualms with replacing every associate in every store. In fact, he said, all the managers were told to go a closing competitors stores and speak with the managers to get info about the people they are laying off so they can be hired by this company.

So, I said that it sounds like the company doesn't care about us at all. Blah blah oh yes they do, but they can replace you. Of course they can. They can replace us with people who just got laid off and will be happy to have jobs and would probably even work for less (not much less, tho, I barely made above min. wage).

He's threatened our jobs in the past, but I was full time then and couldn't risk losing my job. I have always been looking, but haven't found anything else, which is why I was still there after 6 crappy years. I think he was really surprised that someone actually took him up on his offer to quit. I figure he's been blowing smoke up all our asses for so long since he hasn't ever acted on his threats.

So, I'm going to call HR tomorrow and tell them what happened, though I'm sure they don't care, since they've never cared about our complaints in the past. Maybe I'll look for something new. I am going to see if I can get some more free lance jobs through Patch.Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514584197790756219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290544879932038960.post-56086598818593234082012-04-29T00:07:00.001-05:002012-04-30T22:40:00.885-05:00Family Dinner

I read two articles today about the Family Dinner. (both called Table Talk, one from the NY Times and one from the Huffington Post) A family dinner is one thing that I want to do, especially now that Wolf is eating real food at every meal.

Growing up we always had family dinners. We had to eat what was on our plate and we couldn't talk about what we watched on TV. It was for catching up with what was going on at school and with friends. My parents still sit down to dinner together at the table, even though its just the two of them.

I guess we do have family dinner every night, its just in front of the TV. Our dining table is in a corner covered with my sewing stuff. My goal is to get that cleaned off and move it so its not in the corner anymore. That will give us a better place to eat instead of in chairs (since we don't own a sofa). There's a nook in the kitchen, but once 3 people sit in it it feels super cramped. We use that as an art table instead.

I want Wolf to enjoy his dinners without distraction where he can feel like he can talk about anything. Plus, I think its important for Kitty to have that stability every night. We only get her 3 weekends a month, so its a good way to catch up with her school week and her friends. The TV is on a lot, especially when Murl is home, so most of her time is tuned out and half listening to us.

I am going to set my goal to have the table set up by next weekend. I also need to find another chair for it, since we only have 2. Then, we can reclaim dinner!
Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514584197790756219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290544879932038960.post-66721265277309190202012-04-28T13:23:00.001-05:002012-04-30T22:39:06.699-05:00KnittingI haven't knitted anything in so long and I should start again. I have so many projects started! Before Murl and I got married I started knitting a had for Kitty's 3rd birthday, but it came out badly and I never fixed it. Last month I unraveled the whole thing and wrapped the yarn around some cardboard to get the kinks out. Maybe I'll start it again and finish it for her birthday in a couple weeks. Three years in the making!Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514584197790756219noreply@blogger.com0
